Neighborhood Watch & Safety
Devonshire doesn’t run a formal, organized watch program — but every resident plays a part in keeping our streets safe. Here’s how to help, and who to call when something needs attention.
Safety starts with awareness
There’s no patrol schedule or block captain roster here — just neighbors who pay attention and look out for one another.
Know your neighbors
The single best deterrent to crime is a street where neighbors recognize each other — and notice when something’s off.
Report, don’t confront
If you see something suspicious, call the non-emergency police line. Never approach a stranger or situation yourself.
Keep entryways lit
A well-lit porch, driveway, and walkway makes your home a less attractive target after dark.
A few habits that make a difference
Lock up, even for quick errands
Most break-ins happen through unlocked doors and windows — get in the habit of locking up every time you leave.
Don’t let packages sit out
Have deliveries held for pickup, sent to a neighbor, or brought in promptly to avoid porch theft.
Trim sightlines
Keep shrubs and landscaping near windows and entryways trimmed so they can’t be used as cover.
Consider a doorbell camera
Video doorbells are inexpensive and often the deciding factor in identifying package theft or break-in attempts.
Heading out of town?
The City of Naperville Police Department offers a free Vacation House Watch program — officers periodically check on your home while you’re away. Ask a trusted neighbor to grab mail and packages, and consider putting interior lights on timers as well.
